Fuego Nuevo purépecha

P'urépecha indigenous peoples celebrate the Fuego Nuevo (New Fire) in Nahuatzen, located in the mountain forests of Michoacan. Since April 2012, P'urépecha communities such as Nurio, Cherán, and Urapicho have organized communal guards to protect their communities against attacks from loggers and organized crime. These communities claim a right to autonomy and self-organization, rejecting the forms of authority imposed upon them by government programs.
